University Technology Colleges (UTCs) are new revolutionary government funded schools for 14-19 year olds created to fill to the gap of advanced level technical skills needed to prosper in the 21st century. By 2016 more than 30,000 students will be following a new technical education pathway.
UTCs focus on STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and maths) and offer technically orientated courses which encompass aspects of both the national curriculum and technical and vocation elements. UTCs specialise in one or two areas and use latest technology and equipment in the industry. They also give a sound education in ICT and business skills. They fully prepare their student for higher education and employment.
UTCs are led by a sponsoring university who help design the curriculum, appoint key staff and governors, and provide teacher training and development opportunities and supports students transition to university. In addition to being led and sponsored by a university the UTC also is sponsored by local businesses and employers that are relevant to the STEM subjects. Some examples of sponsors are Siemens, Bosch, Bentley, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, Sellafield and Kings College NHS Trust.
Educate is currently working with a number of UTCs to help them recruit ambitious, dynamic and entrepreneurial leaders. Positions currently open are:
- UTC Crewe – Principal Designate
- UTC Warrington – Principal Designate
- UTC Midlands – Interim consultant Leader
